STEPS TO SPIRITUAL FORMATION
Becoming a Franciscan usually begins with someone 'hearing about' our meetings or 'wondering about' those people dressed in brown or by a 'Word of Knowledge' from the Lord saying that they've been called and set apart for this. Whether it is a Word from God or curiousity that causes one to 'come and see' - the process is the same.
There is first a 'Time of Inquiry', where you come to our Sunday morning meetings and study along side of us. If this sparks an interest, you will make a 'Temporary Commitment' into Franciscan Fire and will join in the monthly meetings where you will begin a period of Formation as a Postulant. During this time you will study the 'Rule of secular Franciscans, the Way of Life, how Saint Francis established the Order, what it means to be Franciscan, the call to holiness…
After completing the Postulant course, there is a 12 month (12 lesson) course of study for Novices. In this study, you will discuss the Gospel life of prayer, penance, loyalty, the Eucharist, Mary, obedience, poverty, chastity and life in community. These studies go beyond just head knowledge; hearts are changed as we are transformed into the likeness of the life of Christ and conformed to the will of Christ.
After the time of Inquiry, Postulant and Novice phase, you will be asked if you are ready to become a Professed Member of the Order of Franciscan Penitents. In this Profession, you make a Vow to adhere to the Franciscan Way of Life. This is a permanent vow, although it is renewed annually. This process takes from 18 months to three years.
The time of 'Spiritual Formation' does not end when you've made that vow; you are continually being transformed from 'Glory to Glory' - walking side by side with your brothers and sisters in Franciscan community.
